Abstract

Affective polarization is reshaping the landscape of modern democracies, with profound consequences for political behavior, institutional functioning, and societal cohesion. While polarization often manifests as ideological or partisan divides, it also extends into emotional and social dimensions, influencing how citizens perceive and engage with political opponents. These divisions can undermine trust in democratic institutions, erode tolerance, and intensify conflict, while simultaneously driving political participation and strengthening group identities. This section explores the broad spectrum of affective polarization, with an emphasis on its diverse origins and multifaceted impacts. Key questions include: How do economic, cultural, and technological changes contribute to polarization? In what ways do social media and information ecosystems amplify or mitigate these divisions? How does polarization shape policymaking, governance, and public opinion in multiparty contexts? We invite papers and panels that investigate these dynamics across different political systems and cultural contexts. Contributions are encouraged from political science, sociology, media studies, psychology, and related fields. Themes may include: - The interplay between polarization and trust in democratic institutions. - The role of media and communication in exacerbating or countering polarization. - Comparative analyses of polarization in established versus emerging democracies. - Strategies for mitigating polarization’s negative effects while preserving democratic contestation. By addressing these critical issues, this section aims to foster a deeper understanding of polarization’s complex role in shaping contemporary politics.
