Abstract

This panel critically examines the nuanced relationships between affective polarization and the adherence to, or erosion of, democratic norms. It offers empirical and theoretical contributions to better understand the multifaceted ways in which affective polarization impacts political tolerance, participation, and the support for civil liberties, delving into both the potential threats and the constructive roles it might play within democratic societies.
