Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of mis/disinformation and journalistic responses in seven European countries (Poland, Norway, Croatia, Spain, Iceland, Italy, and Bulgaria) through a comparative approach based on semi-structured interviews conducted between 2023 and 2024. By analysing the role of social media, political polarisation, and economic pressures on business models, the study highlights how these factors contribute to the erosion of journalistic standards and the proliferation of false information. The findings reveal a diversity of journalistic practices and regulatory contexts, emphasising the importance of strengthening quality journalism as a response to disinformation. Additionally, the study explores the dynamics of transnational cooperation among journalists and the role of European Union policies, with a particular focus on regulating digital platforms and algorithms. It concludes by proposing strategies to address the structural challenges characterising the European media landscape.
