The phenomenon of post-truth politics is generally discussed in terms of a profound transformation of political culture, the public sphere and democracy in the age of post-democracy. The question is whether post-truth politics in its various manifestations necessarily undermines democracy by increasing polarisation and political extremism, or whether democracy is also reclaimed in the ways in which the challenges of polarisation and disinformation are addressed by transnational governance, the ways in which journalism and science communication are renewed, and the ways in which new forms of civic engagement are established. The panel examines the role of the media (old and new) in fostering polarisation, extremism and post-truth, and considers how journalism and regulators can be strengthened in response to these challenges. It also proposes to look at various counter-strategies developed by progressive social movements and civil society, and their innovative use of social media, as a way to maintain a truth orientation in public debates.
