Abstract

The paper will focus on how Islamist thinkers in Turkey have addressed the tension between nation and the umma. It will investigate the fault-line between Ottoman and Turkey-centered narratives on the one hand and more 'internationalist' perspectives; and radical views that reject such accommodation with the modern nation-state and the system it has engendered. The paper will also illustrate how different conceptions of the state are linked to the ideas of nation and the umma and the relationship between the two.
