A framework to analyze intersectionality in discourse

Intersectionality has been defined as a normative and an empirical paradigm. Since its coinage, several scholars have argued that intersectionality lacks a consistent methodology. Yet, the absence of a clear path to conduct intersectional research enables researchers to look for new and creative ways to deal with the complexity of intersectionality. In this article, I propose a methodology to analyze intersectionality in discourse, which emerges from the understanding intersectionality as analytical sensibility, which characterizes a particular way of thinking of thinking on sameness, difference, and power. The methodology proposed consists of a systematized framework that builds on the six key assumptions delineated by Hancock of intersectionality research, as well as, on the works of theorists of intersectionality and on existent propositions that evaluate how intersectionality is employed by social movements or in public policy. The framework encompasses seven dimensions that allow to analyze multiple axes of inequality and their relationship, as well as the complex ways in which inequalities are entangled. By employing a manifesto of the Catalan feminist movement for the International Women’s Day, I demonstrate how the use of the framework elucidates how intersectionality is used and its implications in the creation of power relations.
