Abstract

It is now common among Universities to establish the role of Professor of Practice. A Professor of Practice is a practitioner or official from international organizations with practical knowledge. Initially developed to facilitate greater integration of industrial and business experts into education programmes, the title is now also used to integrate officials from international organizations and their practical knowledge into teaching pathways. Higher education programmes increasingly are required by accrediting bodies to provide students access to instruction from individuals active in practice. In contrast, Professor of Practice have very often a limited experience in teaching. They might have an academic background, but they often need training in teaching or to work in combination with another academic. This paper reflects on the potential role of Professor of Practice in Higher Education and on the advantages and challenges to involve them in the educational offering of an academic institution. Relevance: Colleagues will share views on this new academic title and will have the possibility to reflect on the advantages and challenges of including these experts in their academic programmes
