Abstract

Drawing on 34 structured interviews with Romanian trade union leaders and document analysis of agreements with the IMF and the European Community, as well as other relevant documents the proposed paper maps out empowering and disempowering elements, showing both the difficulties and possibilities brought about by EU membership for the Romanian trade union movement. The findings are structured according to the level of governance, where they take place and the relative accessibility of these levels for the Romanian TU movement.
