Graduate training is an increasingly hot topic in higher education and research policy in European countries that are making major efforts to develop and strengthen their research profiles and potentials. Both the Bologna process and international competition are causing a fundamental review of the way universities consider graduate education as exemplified in France by the regional and national governments increased funding and call for projects related to the future of graduate studies, especially PHD programmes. In the Parisian region alone, it is the regional government’s (Conseil Régional de l’Ile de France) 2nd priority both in their political platform and in terms of call for projects. In most cases, the aims are to innovate and reform the ways in which research talent is supported and developed. The challenges facing faculty and universities are many in guiding and reforming these graduate programmes. This panel, inspired by the works of our transatlantic colleagues, seeks to analyse the current trends including reforming programme structures and pedagogical approaches, the effectiveness of teacher training programmes for graduate students, as well as professional development issues. Topics include professional training for students as well for graduate mentors such as how to best mentor students during the preparation of their PhD. A specific emphasis will be placed on the diversity and comparison of national or regional approaches within Europe.
