Regulation plays an increasingly central role in governance worldwide. Consequently, the need for robust and sophisticated metrics of regulation is more critical than ever. Measuring regulation allows us to refine existing theories while fostering the development of new theoretical frameworks in regulatory governance, develop cross-national comparisons, understand how governments address contemporary challenges, and assess regulatory effectiveness. In recent years, several advancements have been made in regulatory measurement. Scholars have explored various aspects of regulation, including its content, burden, public perception, organizational capacity, agenda-setting, and more. These new measurement tools not only enhance our understanding of regulation but also enable empirical testing of existing theories and the development of new ones. However, much work remains to be done. This panel aims to capture recent advancements and inspire new directions for future research.
