Abstract

his panel investigates the evolving relationship between political parties and citizen participation in democratic systems. The papers explore a wide range of issues, including the influence of party cues versus policy information on voter behavior in direct democracy, internal gender-based barriers within political parties, strategies parties use to protect themselves from political intimidation and violence, and the role of activism in contexts of political instability and consociational power-sharing. Additionally, the panel examines institutional responses to citizen-driven proposals in the European Convention. Together, these contributions offer a comprehensive view of how political parties both shape and are shaped by participatory dynamics, institutional constraints, and societal pressures in contemporary democracies.
