Knowledge production and publishing: Political Science and International Relations in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract

This conference panel aims to discuss the practice of knowledge produciton and publishing of International Relations (IR) and Political Science journals in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The past decade has witnessed increased calls for reflections on knowledge production in social sciences and humanities and the division of labour between the so-called centres and (semi-)peripheries. As sometimes perceived, the intellectual centres were supposed to provide theoretical reflection and ideas (i.e. define the theoretical fundaments of the discipline), whereas the (semi-)peripheries were supposed to play a supporting role and provide empirical data. The contribution of (semi-)peripheries, including CEE, to the formation of the discipline and global knowledge related to IR and politics has remained contested. Nationally and regionally embedded debates on the character of particular national academic fields existing beyond and parallel to the centre have been taking place. However, by looking at regional journals, this panel aims to explore the relevance of CEE’s IR and Political Science in terms of its regional and, especially, global relevance and value. While CEE has been repeatedly labelled as one of these (semi-)peripheries of the global discipline, more than 50 journals and numerous publishing houses are active in the region and produce IR and Political Science publications. As the Russian war against Ukraine has drawn more interest to the region and increased calls for its increased assertiveness in how it speaks back to knowledge produced on it elsewhere, it is high time to discuss how the knowledge production in the region works in practice.
