Abstract

There are many good reasons to study opposition to gender equality: helping understand what ‘gender equality’ means; counteracting such opposition, clarifying the rise and fall of political goals and strategies… It is therefore surprising that opposition to gender equality is rarely studied as a topic in itself. The few existing studies are not embedded in any overarching framework that transcends many or some of the above arguments. Yet there is quite some information about this 'on the side' in large scale research projects such as MAGEEQ, QUING, RNGS, FEMCIT, EUROSPHERE and others. This panel aims to solicit papers that use existing or new data to shed light on the understanding of gender equality in this opposition at any stage of the political and policy process, by any actor. Politically it also aims to contribute to knowledge that can be used to counteract such opposition. Scientifically it wants to outline theoretically why, where and who opposes gender equality and gather knowledge about its chance for success or failure as a political or policy goal.
