Learn to adeptly apply narrative, visual, and creative participatory research methods in your research, addressing ethical challenges and acquiring the tools for effective design and implementation with our online course led by Jo Howard.
During this course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding and practical experience in utilising narrative, visual, and creative participatory research methods. You will develop an appreciation for the ethical, political, and practical challenges inherent in this approach. Moreover, you will acquire both conceptual and practical tools essential for designing and executing participatory research in your PhD or research project.
The course consists of asynchronous pre-class assignments such as readings, individual reflection/journalling, and small peer-group discussions on emerging research plans, and daily 3 hour in-person sessions on Zoom. Presentations will be combined with Q&A sessions and small-group work.
During the course, you'll collaborate using Miro. If you're new to this software, there will be a one-hour introductory session before the course begins.
No prior experience in participatory research methods is required, but some knowledge of qualitative research methods is recommended.
3 ECTS credits awarded for engaging fully in class activities.
1 additional ECTS credit awarded for completing a post-course assignment.
Jo Howard is a Research Fellow and Leader of the Participation, Inclusion and Social Change Cluster at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex. She also co-convenes the Master’s programme in Participation, Power and Social Change.
Jo's work is focused on participatory and action research processes with people living in poverty and marginalisation. Additionally, Jo designs, delivers and advises on training and learning processes in Participatory Research and reflective and collaborative learning.

Knowledgeable Instructor

'Hands-on approach'
While I expected to learn about the normative background and various methods of participatory research, I did not expect the hands-on approach to testing out these methods ourselves which proved to be very very useful and something I will continue to apply.
