Autumn School on Teaching and Learning Politics

Empowering educators in times of change

21 – 25 October 2024, Maastricht University

  @ECPRTeaching

Applications are now closed.

Our Standing Group on Teaching and Learning Politics presents its Autumn School connecting students from Europe and beyond with leading scholars committed to pedagogical excellence in political science.

About

Held in collaboration with Maastricht University, the Autumn School of our Standing Group on Teaching and Learning Politics is a dynamic learning hub for early career educators – including PhD students, postdocs and teaching fellows – and senior academics looking to enhance their teaching skills.

Teaching and learning in times of change

Every era presents its challenges. and education is no exception. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies and remote learning methods, prompting the much-needed reflection on the benefits of on-campus education. The climate crisis, international conflicts and increased attention to diversity and inclusivity posed new challenges to constructive dialogue in the classroom.

A myriad of questions arise: Are students still showing up for typical on-campus lectures? What should we do online and what works best on campus? How can we create a safe educational environment to discuss contentious issues?

Empowering educators

While navigating these changes, it is also important to acknowledge that the fundamentals of good teaching remain unphased. Uncritical use of educational technology can equally alienate students or inhibit their learning. Principles of good class management retain their value both online as well as on campus.

The challenge of formulating a teaching style that works for yourself and your students can be daunting.  This Autumn School is designed to offer political science educators the knowledge and skills to develop an effective strategy amidst technological, political and sociological developments.
