Scope

This workshop seeks to encourage discussion on fundamental issues and questions that migration scholars will encounter in their research process.

Broaden your methodological knowledge
Especially in the context of the inter- or multi-disciplinary nature of migration studies, this workshop aims to raise awareness of and appreciation for the importance of developing and using solid methodological procedures and credible data to arrive at rigorous research results that are understood by and relevant to scholars and practitioners alike.

Learn to confront migration issues with confidence
By covering diverse methodologies in migration research, this workshop sets out to prepare engaged and conscientious scholars on how to confront migration issues knowing that these are wrapped up in challenging power relations and growing inequalities characteristic of today’s world.

Enhance your critical thinking
While migration issues are hardly ever neutral, scholars can be trained to think critically about key migration concepts and their measurements, how to test their research hypotheses, how to build theoretical frameworks to synthesise key findings and how to share such findings to academic and non-academic audiences.

The workshop will feature several sessions that adopt a problem-based and tool-based approach to conducting migration research. In each session, speakers will focus their presentations on particular questions or issues that migration scholars are likely to face, while also discussing how a particular method or data source can offer a helpful solution. Each workshop session is guided by a key question.
