The Université Catholique de Lille (Catholic University of Lille), founded in 1875, is France’s largest private, not‐for‐profit university with 33,000 students spread across five faculties, 20 schools and institutes, and 15 research centres. Heir to the School of Political and Social Sciences created within the University in 1894, ESPOL, the European School of Political and Social Sciences, was opened in 2012 to offer students an education on European and global issues. As part of the school, the ESPOL-Lab Research Centre for European and International Politics is focussing on three thematic areas: quality of democracy, reconfigurations of the International, and politics of the Anthropocene. Europe constitutes a cross-cutting dimension that is present in each of these three areas.
