Abstract

This section deals with the contentious politics occurring around issues relating to social exclusion. This includes social movements by "socially excluded" people such as the unemployed, migrants, women, or other minority groups, as well as the mobilization of conflicts concerning the position of these groups in society. Papers should focus on (1) the contentious nature of the political field of social exclusion and (2) collective mobilizations "from below" involving the minority groups mentioned above as well as other social groups acting on behalf of these groups or, more generally, addressing issues relating to social exclusion. Here are some of the questions that can be addressed: To what extent are there social movements involving people with poor resources and "socially excluded" groups, and what explain their political mobilization or lack thereof? How does social exclusion and the forces supposedly leading to it (e.g. globalization) create a potential for the mobilization of groups in society fighting against both these forces and their alleged outcomes, and how does this potential translate in actual mobilization? What is the degree of contentiousness of the political field of social exclusion today, and how does social change lead to a transformation of the contentious politics of social exclusion?
