Abstract

Far-right parties and movements have increasingly mobilised identity-based issues to further their exclusionary and reactionary agendas. From antifeminist and anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric to the exploitation of class grievances and racial anxieties, these movements deploy divisive narratives that resonate across contexts while adapting to local circumstances. This panel aims to critically interrogate how gender, race, class, and other identities are constructed, contested, and, at times, instrumentalised within far-right politics. We invite contributions that address topics including but not limited to: • Gender Backlash and Democratic Contestation: The far right’s use of antigenderism and femonationalist narratives in diverse national and transnational contexts. • Masculinity and Populism: How masculinity and sexism intersect to shape support for populist radical right parties and movements. • Intersectionality and Identity Politics in the Far Right: The interplay between race, gender, class, and sexuality in far-right ideology and mobilization. • Backlash Against Inclusion: Exploring how far-right actors across the globe politicise the inclusion of marginalised groups, leveraging resentment against liberal democratic advancements in equality. • Comparative Analyses of Identity-based Discourses: Context-specific and transnational studies of how far-right parties and movements articulate and politicise gender issues in different socio-political landscapes. This panel seeks to bring together scholars from political science, sociology, gender studies, and related disciplines to deepen our understanding of the role identity plays in far-right and populist politics. We welcome theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches.
