The aim of the paper is to assess the comparative effectiveness of aid sanctions on different types of autocratic regimes. The present paper intends to contribute fresh knowledge to the effectiveness of aid sanctions by bringing together insights from both sanctions research and development studies, by complementing the standard sanctions dataset (Hufbauer et al. 2007) with the EU’s experience as a donor, employing data on autocracies from the autocratic regime dataset (Geddes, Wright and Frantz) by testing the data with the help of econometric analysis rather than relying primarily on qualitative methods.
