Abstract

This presentation examines the methodological, ethical, and sociopolitical complexities inherent in conducting feminist online ethnography across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Drawing upon feminist standpoint theory, intersectionality, and digital ethnographic frameworks, it argues that the study of women's digital activism in the MENA region demands a rigorously adapted qualitative methodology — one capable of navigating state surveillance, episodic internet blackouts, entrenched patriarchal norms, and the persistent epistemological tension between transnational Western feminist paradigms and locally grounded, culturally authentic feminist expression. The presentation further explores how researchers can ethically engage with feminist participants in contexts of acute political vulnerability, anonymity concerns, and unequal digital access. It proposes an integrative methodological framework that centres the lived experiences of women activists, acknowledges the researcher's own positionality, and deploys multi-method online approaches — including online semi-structured interviews, thematic content analysis, and digital observation — to capture the multidimensional realities of feminist digital praxis in the MENA context.
