Abstract

The third session of the SGGP online seminar series Doing Gender and Politics Research in Challenging Times and Environments examines how feminist researchers negotiate access, researcher-participant relationships and their own positionality when researching politically sensitive activism and vulnerable communities in the context of state repression and institutional marginalisation. The three presentations explore research with Russian anti-war feminist activists in exile and on their digital communities; feminist online ethnography of women’s digital activism in the Middle East and North Africa; and research with dam-affected women in Brazil whose experiences have been silenced by institutions and dominant development narratives. The presentations ask in different ways, under what conditions researchers can gain meaningful access to politically vulnerable or marginalised communities while practicing care and reciprocity toward their participants.
