As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies reshape governance and political processes, their ethical and methodological implications demand deeper exploration in political research. This paper draws on findings from five multidisciplinary panel discussions organized under the AI4Gov Horizon EU project, using a qualitative focus group methodology to examine critical topics such as AI bias, inclusivity, transparency, misinformation, and the ethical challenges associated with applying AI in public policy and administration.
The qualitative insights inform a broader understanding of how AI can enhance data-driven policymaking and political analysis by improving efficiency and enabling evidence-based decisions. These findings also highlight key risks, including algorithmic bias, lack of transparency, and unequal access to AI’s benefits. Building on these findings, the paper proposes an indicative curriculum for workshops designed to raise citizen awareness of AI ethics and empower communities to advocate for fair and inclusive governance. The proposed curriculum serves as an example of how qualitative insights can guide the creation of educational initiatives that address public engagement, digital literacy, and the development of transparent AI systems tailored to political contexts.
By integrating qualitative findings into workshop design, this paper contributes to the growing body of knowledge on ethical AI in governance. It emphasizes citizen empowerment as a cornerstone for responsible AI deployment, offering actionable insights for political scientists, policymakers, and technologists navigating the challenges and opportunities of data-driven politics.
