Abstract

This study undertakes a historical analysis to build a map of climate narratives and the paradigms from which they arise, spanning from the 1960s to the present. Our findings reveal a previously uncharted map of climate narratives shaped by five fundamental paradigms as their primary drivers. In addition, we identify an important normative challenge: the ideals to which these narratives aspire have proven to be unpragmatic. There is a mismatch between the ideals to which they strive and the actual consequences of the world affected by climate change. This analysis underscores a critical disjunction, indicating that many narratives are shaped by approaches that lack alignment with real-world implications and consequences.
