Abstract

Strategies will be outlined to cultivate safe and inclusive spaces in academia, specifically from the viewpoint of, and for, young female PhD researchers of colour, addressing the unique challenges faced by this vulnerable demographic. The presentation will emphasize the importance of networking and support systems. It will advocate for the creation of (in)formal networks within academic communities, providing emotional and academic support to these researchers. The concept of 'counter spaces' will be introduced as vital environments for contesting deficit norms and fostering a positive collegiate racial climate. The importance of reinforcing the intellectual value of academics of colour will be highlighted. This includes establishing platforms for presenting work, facilitating constructive feedback, and enhancing academic profiles. Building solidarity within these safe spaces is crucial, ensuring an atmosphere of trust, respect, and non-judgement. The talk will also highlight the importance of informal support mechanisms for and by women of colour, such as mentorship and peer support, often undervalued in departmental settings. An integral part of the talk will be the sharing of personal experiences, particularly my role in co-establishing and organizing the Learning Network on Decolonization at Ghent University. This initiative, inspired by the BLM movement and the "Decolonize UGent" open letter, focuses on decolonizing education, research, and services, through activities like lectures and workshops. The network exemplifies the application of the practices discussed, highlighting both the challenges and unanticipated benefits.
