Abstract

This textbook applies a political economy lens and an interdisciplinary approach to the European integration process, analysing the European Union’s environmental, economic and political sustainability dimensions. Written for students with different backgrounds (business, economics, political science), it aims at capacitating them to critically analyse the on-going process of European integration and the current challenges facing the EU. It discusses the evolution of European integration in terms of its various stages and examines the issue of the optimal size and scope of the Union. It places emphasis on the EU’s regulatory character, notably EU trade, the Single Market, Economic and Monetary Union and the European Green Deal. It concludes with a chapter on the functioning and evolution of the EU in constant crisis mode.
