Abstract

An insertion of “resiliency of democratic institutions” into five key priorities of Czech 2022 presidency indicates a political commitment of to focus onto the rule of law agenda. The following text aspires to map practice of Czech presidency in domain of democratic institutions and rule of law and to explain reasons behind its (in)ability to deliver expected outcomes. Firstly, the article analyses specifics of the EU regulatory framework for the rule of law and impact of the Czech internal political situation after 2021 parliamentary elections onto the presidency performance. Secondly, the text covers four key policy issues requiring the presidency attention in the second half of 2022: evaluation of judicial systems of member states, formation of new EU rules for media freedom and fight against disinformation, amendment of the EP elections process, and judicial response to crimes committed during Russian invasion to Ukraine.
