Abstract

This paper presents a game-theoretic model of negative campaigning in SMD and SMD-run-off elections. Predictions are generated that link institutions, competitiveness, and electoral rules to campaign strategy. The model is tested using a new dataset of 13,000 campaign advertisements. Results show how electoral rules structure the targets and sources of negative campaigning, with important impacts from re-election rules, campaign length, and party strength.
