Abstract

In Slovak education system, Roma students are typically segregated and face systemic racism at all levels. They are rarely part of the conversation, let alone considered a strong (or even potential) critical mass. It is obvious, that any inclusive longterm solution has to deal with this and empower students directly. We believe it is time to support students in their own critical reflection of the status quo, developing their critical consciousness skills and forging new narratives that work for them. The Opre Terne Roma Program does exactly that: it links both formal and informal education systems and works with all relevant stakeholders in a scalable way. Opre Terne Roma program is in its pilot phase. It was pitched by Karin Nosková, a talented student of Education Studies at University College London. The program is being implemented by the NGO Platforma Naše školstvo working in Banská Bystrica region in central Slovakia in close parthership with 3 schools in town Lučenec. The pilot will have direct impact on 20 Roma students and 3 school coordinators. By the end of this year, we will provide complete methodological support for the whole programme that is scalable and sustainable. If we are successful, next year the program will have over 100 members. In our 90minute workshop, we will walk you through the whole concept, activities we do with students and also our strategy on scale and impact. The workshop is recommended for everyone interested in inclusion, supporting students with less opportunities, overcoming systemic issues and developing critical mass. We highly welcome all feedback and inspiration and are looking forward to an energetic session.
