Abstract

The History of Private Law is a course taught at Faculty of Law, Comenius University to first-year master’s degree programme students. The programme is relatively new and thus the course had to be ‘newly created’. Based on prior experience with teaching the course, the authors identified three key structural problems with the course, i. e. lack of in-class participation, low relevance of the course’s outcomes for students’ further studies or future careers, inadequate assessment, and prepared new syllabus that should have eliminated these issues to better fit the needs of international students. The contribution is a reflection of teaching the redesigned legal history course during winter semester of current academic year. It analyses the redesigned syllabus, its weak and strong moments and what can be done differently in order to deepen the level of reaching the desired outcome. In order to engage the audience, the contribution will use the method of discussion when presenting the old version of syllabus; the discussion’s aim will be to identify structural issues of the course. Then a group work shall take place; each group will be presented with specific teaching challenge and their task will be to propose way(s) of tackling the challenge and identify possible pros and cons of the proposition. If there will be not enough participants in the audience, the group work will transfer into working in pairs or brainstorming discussion. Based on the abovementioned, by the end of the presentation, the audience should know the teaching challenges arising when teaching international students, to propose solution to presented teaching problem, to critically examine the proposed solutions.
