Theory and Method:
The proposed paper maps the current roles assigned to the EESC, its organizational design and rules and its latest (2000-2011) contributions in the form of opinions and “liason’ efforts. The Committee’s contribution to ‘social’ and ‘civil’ dialogues at the European level will be assessed, as well as its influence and standing as head of the network of national Economic and Social Councils. The input of the EESC in the operation and composition of select national ESCs is evaluated in an attempt to introduce a comparative dimension (with particular reference to Southern European cases).
The contribution is framed by current politico-theoretical discussions on the concept and workings of political representation, consensus and compromise, discussing in this context the actual and potential role of the institution.
