Abstract

The COVID crisis spurred a number of studies on European solidarity which advanced our knowledge on preferences for solidarity. We build on these studies in two ways. First, we see how stable and long-lasting solidaristic attitudes are by relying on a new survey fielded in 15 countries in summer of 2021. The existing studies instead gathered data during the first wave of the COVID crisis (March-December 2020) when altruistic preferences may have been influenced by the proximity of the event. Second, different concepts of solidarity (reciprocity, charity, insurance, etc.) are used and operationalised to investigate how pertinent these concepts are to capture the evolution of preferences over time.
