Abstract

The aim of this study is to better understand people’s attitudes toward parenthood of same-sex couples in Europe. We would also like to direct attention to several previously under-researched aspects of social attitudes regarding same-sex parenting issues. We also try to form different clusters within European societies based on their attitudes towards same-sex parenting. The empirical base of the present research is the fifth round of the European Values Study (EVS), conducted in 2018. Using ordered logistic regressions, we examine the impact of several individual and country-level characteristics on the agreement level with the statement that “Homosexual couples are as good parents as other couples”. As a starting point we will use the findings of our previous study (Takács – Szalma – Bartus 2016), where we focused on another similar EVS variable from the 2008 round (“Homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children”) to assess European attitudes towards adoption by same-sex couples.
