Abstract

Building on recent research on the role of member states in the formulation of EU trade policy, this paper discusses the role of Britain in this policy as well as the likely impact of Brexit. The focus will be both on the impact of Brexit on the effectiveness of the EU as trade negotiator and on the preferences the EU represents internationally. The contribution will discuss in particular the consequences for the material power and interests of the EU so far, the dynamics of institutional changes in the formulation of EU foreign trade policy, and how Brexit has influenced outsider's perception of EU trade power.
