The Romanian society needs a longer time to accept sexual minorities and recognise their rights. Our MPs believe that such an undertaking is not a priority for Romania nowadays, although many EU rules have been introduced on this subject over time. Moreover, they feel that it’s a waste of time, refusing to endorse any legislative initiative aimed at granting legal recognition to LGBT couples in the country. On the other hand, there are Romanian MPs who tolerate them, but, because of their religious convictions, can not accept them.
The purpose of this research paper is to analyze how LGBT people are suffering from discrimination as much as Roma people and also highlight that most of the opinions expressed on this delicate subject in the last period have been extremely virulent. Between 2013 and 2017 Romanian newspapers published articles in which different political and religious points of view failed to meet the LGBT community’s demands with regard to the recognition of their rights. Accordingly, just a very few politicians stand for sexual minorities’ rights.
