Abstract

The proposed paper applies the workshop topic to a sub-field of peacebuilding, namely mediation. The article argues that the mediation field faces particular challenges with regard to the research-practice transfer. This is the case with regard to the gap between the academic theories on mediation and the practical conduct of it; the reasons for the gap; as well as the role that think tanks, working groups, and advisory bodies can play in bridging that gap. The article explores these challenges by asking three questions. First, it assesses the nature of the knowledge produced on mediation. Second, it explores the purpose of the knowledge production particularly looking at the tension between practical relevance and critical distance of mediation research. Third, it analyzes the impact the produced knowledge has in terms of how mediation practitioners refer to it in their work. In conclusion, the article reflects on the adaptations that would be needed to increase the practical relevance of mediation research.
