The paper looks into the variety of causes that produce legislative turnover in the national parliament. Among the potential causes are alternative career opportunities, party rules on candidacy, de-selection by selectorates, high risk list placements, electoral seat losses, retirement, ill health or death. Using legislative turnover data since the 1990 the paper establishes the relative contributions of such factors to the relatively high level of legislative turnover in Austria.
