Since Elinor Ostrom first introduced the IAD framework in the early 1980s it has provided the foundation for the development of two major theoretical approaches, Local Public Economies, and Common Pool Resources. Furthermore, Ostrom introduced a closely related framework on social-ecological systems in 2008. The original framework, how it has evolved, the research programs it has spawned, and likely future developments will be discussed.
