Abstract

My aim is to establish a more precise picture of the evolution of public policies toward immigrants in countries with a radical different background. Several indexes have been developed to measure precisely the evolution of the rights of immigrants over time. But the issue of resistance to the liberalization process is still insufficiently explored. To complete the actual literature, I opted for a qualitative approach. I will proceed with an analysis of parliamentary debates in Britain, France and Canada since 2006. For each country, I will consider the arguments raised by members of the parliament opposed to liberalization. Do these arguments correlate with the assumptions of the current literature? Are there other reasons brought forward by members of the parliament to justify a backlash against immigrant rights? This research falls within the general framework of the development of public policies related to citizenship and immigration in Europe.
