More than half of all Sub-Saharan African countries introduced dual citizenship. What were the driving factors and what are obstacles to dual citizenship? The paper gives an overall overview over the situation of dual citizenship in Sub-Saharan Africa. Further, it explores countries that introduced dual citizenship, and countries that have not. The paper pays special attention on the political situation in a given country and shows how it influences the matter of dual citizenship. It is known that countries with multiparty politics are more likely to allow dual citizenship; therefore a blocked political transition and conflict seem to be the biggest obstacles to dual citizenship. In contrast a shift to multiparty politics seems to increase the likelihood of recognition of dual citizenship.
