Abstract

Citizenship for Muslims is a matter of belonging and identity. Sharia courts and arbitration tribunals aim to resolve disputes on marriage and family. Gender inequality is a major obstacle to legal pluralism. Cultural pluralism is recognized, but one law for all is imperative. The UK respects the internal autonomy of religions, but must protect the civil rights of people, whether believers or not.
