In my 2012 article “Beyond the state? Civil sociality and other notions of citizenship” I noted that my Mexican informants spoke of citizenship as something that could be defined in law but which was ultimately about “living in society”. My main concern in that article was to determine whether and in what sense “living in society” could be considered a kind of citizenship beyond the state. I argued that it could but conceded that it depends on what exactly one considers to be the state. I propose to reflect further on what the state might mean in such a context.
