Though attention for immigration has been growing in almost all established democratized, significant differences remain across countries and over time in how high the issue is on the political agenda. Yet, what explains these differences remain unclear. We still know little on the mechanisms that have lead to the politicization of immigration. Most of the literature has focuses on the role of anti-immigration parties, or on the influence of societal factors like the presence of large groups of migrants, or economic recession. Yet, how these mechanisms combine with other elements, like the strategy of mainstream parties, the role of social movements and of civic groups, or the conditioning effect of the political opportunity structure still deserve more in-depth analysis. In this panel, we seek for papers that would try to address this question of the mechanisms behind the politicization of immigration. Cross-country comparison as well as longitudinal studies are especially welcome.
