EU-Asia-Pacific interconnections and influences have grown significantly over the last decades. Given the Asia-Pacific’s economic, political, cultural, and historical ties to Europe, it seems natural to ask how both Asia and Pacific perceive the EU. What do individuals – policy-makers and members of the general public -- know about the EU? What images and ideas about the EU are represented in various Asa-Pacific discourses? How does the EU ‘stack up’ against other regions and countries in the world? How much connectivity is there between the Asia-Pacific and Europe? And what issues do the Asia-Pacific nations see as important in relation to the EU? The EU’s relations with principal and emerging partners in the Asia-Pacific have traditionally concentrated on trade and, recently, on human rights dialogue, as well as programmes on economic, commercial and development cooperation. In recent years, security and political cooperation have contributed to a broader agenda, involving new opportunities for diplomatic manoeuvre. A key aspect of the EU’s strategy towards Asia has been to strengthen further the mutual awareness between Europe and Asia and to reduce persisting stereotypes. With perceptions studies being an integral part of EU public diplomacy, the panel will contribute to a more informed consideration of the changing framework of EU external action towards the Asia-Pacific. The panel will also examine a potential of systematic analysis of EU external images and perceptions for a more effective EU communication outside of its borders
