This Roundtable discusses the challenges that beset the European Union today and the likely scenarios that open up before it. Scenarios depend, of course, on the visions that various actors – both within and without the EU – have of the Union. While it is important to study the inner dynamics and the development of the Union from a ‘domestic politics’ point of view, it is equally important to chart its changing place in the global context. For this reason, this roundtable aims to discuss the likely development of the Union in the next decades, taking into serious considerations not only the dreams (or nightmares!) of Europeans but also the expectations that the rest of the world has on the Union.
