Abstract

The panel explores the impact of the current economic crisis on gender and politics in Europe Much of what has already been published on gender and the economic crisis comes from the field of economics – assessing the impact of the crisis on women and men’s employment patterns – or sociology – evaluating the shifts in national and European gender regimes. The aim of the panel is to highlight how the economic crisis is deeply intertwined with a political one and how this is both gendered and racialized. We focus, first, on the austerity policies and institutional changes, second, on analyzing the Europeanization of gender equality policies in times of crisis and the hegemonic constructions about gender and the crisis, and third, understanding the gendered and racialized patterns of resistances and struggles to austerity politics. The papers cover both general topics and country specific cases from the North and South of Europe.
