Abstract

This panel examines various aspects of EU energy and environmental policies. The papers discuss the success of the EU Energy Community, in particular the extent to which is represents a true pan-European energy market; the well-known REACH regulation (in particular the influence of the US on the EU’s chemicals regime); an assessment of new EU way of dealing with social policy, in particular social policy, which has taken on a more ‘investment’ stance, in which advocates prepare the population for a knowledge-based economy to increase economic growth, job creation and to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty. Finally some of the research presented in this panel focuses on interest groups – in particular how they change and adapt their policy positions in the face of changing information, meanwhile managing reputational losses suffered as a consequence of shifting positions. Research focuses on environmental, transport, and energy issues. All papers are based on primary research and have conducted face-to-face interviews.
