This panel critically interrogates the framings of women and war which are often restrictive in their construction and can serve to reinstate traditional gendered roles of women as “caring”. The panel explores media and policymakers framings of women and war and feminist positions on women in combat. The five papers examine the cases of the Balkan conflicts since 1914, the media portrayal of Islamic State recruitment of young girls in the UK and in France, women’s participation in the Ukraine Crisis and NATO’s social media outputs on women and war. Using different conflicts and time periods, the panel will seek to challenge the dominant narrative of women and war and in doing so will seek to draw attention to the reality of women’s role in conflict.
