Abstract

This panel deals with the nature and shaping factors of organised interests’ relationship with parties in liberal democracies. The aim is first to explore the extent to which interest groups are linked with political parties and vice versa, but also how intensively organized interests actually interact with, and try to influence, political parties in different policy fields, within and outside the national assembly or in the European Union. Second, the panel aims to explore the conditions under which interest groups choose to establish close relationships with parties, or opt for greater distance or separation. Third, focus is on the impact of party-group links: under what conditions do interest groups influence party decision-making (and vice versa)? Primarily, we aim to attract theory-driven papers based on new empirical research in this field, within or across countries/polities. Papers looking at particular kinds of interest groups (and specific political parties) and the interest group-party relationships in general, are welcome.
