Abstract

This panel is on new directions in democratic governance. There is, for example, a trend towards what certain leading thinkers are calling the "new lateral governance". Governments increasingly rely upon non-governmental actors (both corporations and private not-for-profit corporations) for policy development and execution. This encompasses the literature on "new or experimental governance", network governance, and multilateral governance. Given that traditional Weberian articulations of accountability are strictly vertical, how are we to understand democratic accountability in a world (which some call "neo-medieval") employing overlapping jurisdictions and competing spheres of administration?
